Steve Howe fights to save Post Office
15th June, 2006

It might seem like a strange headline, but Steve Howe really is fighting to save a local Post Office branch in Sandford, Devon UK. How is he planning on doing this? The best way a rock star can of course!
The guitarist from Yes will be performing at a fund-raising charity on Friday 16th June at Sandford Parish Hall, with all proceeds going towards the campaign to save the Post Office.
The current owners of the Post Office building, Joan and Trevor Newstead, are planning their retirement, and so have been forced to sell the property. This unfortunately leaves the village with the prospect, and likeliness, that they will end up without a local Post Office.
As such a group of over 300 locals have formed the Sandford Area Community Action (SACA) group to get together and buy the shop for the community, which would not only act as the Post Office, but also sell local produce and offer an information point and Internet access; a plan it would appear Steve Howe firmly supports.
The group need £12000 in order to put down a deposit on the shop, and thanks to a previous show by local band Show of Hands, they already have £1000 for their cause. They have also been approved for Lottery funding, and are in talks with the Rural Enterprise Scheme as well as banks and building societies.
Howe is performing this show just over two months before embarking on a tour with the original line-up of 80's rock band Asia, who are to perform a series of anniversary concerts across North America.
