Here are the answers to the questions above:
  1. What is progressive rock?

Progressive rock is a musical genre that was born in the 1960's, and combined various different influences such as rock, classical and psychedelic musical styles. Based more on a classical, movement based style of music, it is not unusual for progressive rock to comprise of several individually named movements in one track with shifts in time signatures and an evolution of theme throughout. A seven-minute-long track is normal in progressive rock, and a twenty-minute track wouldn't be out of place either!

Prog music (a term coined many years after the original progessive rock bands has formed) often has a literary theme or a political message behind it, and to paraphrase Jon Anderson (Yes et al.) "it's never been drugs, sex and rock and roll" but rather the music in itself.

Progressive rock is all about knowing what the rules are and choosing to ignore them. Pushing the limits of music beyond that which popular culture has come to accept and being innovative with music; taking it places where pop-music wouldn't dare to tread.

As progressive rock is a vast genre, which has been constantly evolving over the past 40 years, several sub-genres exist that separate progressive rock into smaller, easier to manage, chunks that can be more easily catagorised.

  2. Is progressive rock dead?

Far from it! A lot of the older groups (such as Yes, King Crimson and ELP) are still recording and touring, and new bands are being formed all the time. There are plenty of bands (such as Dream Theater) that are examples of modern progressive rock groups which gained recognition during the 1990's and loads of groups that weren't even around last millenium!

Of course, there are many bands that are no longer recording and have ceased touring, but the same can be said of any musical genre. Progressive rock is very much alive!!
