Bob Moog passes away

22nd August, 2005

Bob Moog, the inventor of the Moog Modular Synthesizer, died on 21st August. He was 71. Bob had been diagnosed as having a form of brain cancer (glioblastoma multiforme or GBM) in April this year and had been receiving treatment including radiation treatment and chemotherapy. He leaves behind his wife, Illeana, his five children, and their mother.

Bob was the founderof Moog Music, the company behind many different analog synthesizers that have lent their distinct sound to many different musical styles, but progressive rock musicians in particular have embraced "The Moog" and its offspring. Certainly, many progressive albums would not sound the same if it were not for Bob Moog.

In his memory, his family have set up The Bob Moog Foundation, which is dedicated to the continuing advancement of technology for electronic music, and will continue his work long into the future. A number of his longtime colleagues and friends have agreed to sit on its board, including Wendy Carlos, Joel Chadabpe, John Eaton, David Mash and Rick Wakeman.
